What to Pack & Wear for Horseback Riding in Baja
Heading out on a guided horseback ride through the La Misión valley down toward the Pacific ocean is one of the best ways to experience Baja California. But whether you’re joining us for a sunset trail ride or our famous Margaritas & Taco Party, dressing right ensures you stay comfortable from start to finish. We often have people ask us, what do I need to wear for my ride?
Here is our quick guide on what to wear (and what to leave behind) for your ride at Horses by Jose!
1. Long Pants
While shorts might seem tempting in the warm Mexico sun, long pants are really much more comfortable for riding. Denim jeans or sturdy leggings protect your legs from rubbing against the leather saddle and stirrup leathers.
2. Closed-Toe Shoes
To keep your feet safe in the stirrups and around the horses at the ranch, closed-toe shoes are preferred.
Best choices: Cowboy boots, hiking boots, or sturdy sneakers.
Skip: Sandals, flip-flops, crocs, or slip-on canvas shoes.
3. Sun Protection
The Baja sun is no joke, especially when riding open trails through the valley bed.
Sunscreen: Apply before you get in the saddle.
Sunglasses: A snug-fitting pair keeps the glare and trail dust out of your eyes.
Hats: A baseball cap or secured sun hat works great. Just make sure it fits snugly so it doesn't blow off in a ocean breeze!
4. Small Essentials & Bags
Don't worry about lugging a big backpack on the trail. We equip our saddles with small saddlebags—perfect for storing your phone, lip balm, and sunscreen. If you have larger daypacks or personal items, you can leave them safely secured at the ranch or in our private transport vans while you ride.
5. Don't Worry About Taking Photos!
The absolute best part of riding with us? You don't have to risk dropping your phone while trying to snap a selfie in the saddle. Our guides act as your personal paparazzi, taking high-quality photos and videos of your group throughout the entire trail—included completely free with every ride!
