When guests visit Horses by Jose, one of the first things they notice is the distinct calm that runs through our herd. Our horses don't act like stressed rental mounts—they move with patience, curiosity, and a genuine comfort around humans.
People often ask us: Where do your horses come from? How do you get them so gentle?
The answer lies in our philosophy. Nearly all 35 members of our herd were born, raised, and trained right here at the ranch. Here is a look behind the scenes at how a foal grows into a trusted trail partner.
Born into Belonging
From the day a foal is born at our ranch, they are surrounded by family. They grow up alongside their mothers, aunts, and herd mates.
This natural herd structure is essential. Growing up in a herd teaches young horses natural boundaries, social balance, and confidence. They learn how to read subtle body language from older, wiser horses, creating emotionally stable adults who don't get easily rattled.
Early Handling with Gentleness
From their very first weeks, our foals learn that human hands mean safety, warmth, and care. We practice soft handling—teaching them to accept a gentle touch on their ears, legs, and back without fear.
Because they grow up around our guides, family, and daily ranch life, humans are never seen as something to fear or resist. Trust isn't forced through harsh training techniques; it is built naturally over years of everyday routine.
Gradual, Respectful Training
We never rush a young horse into work.
Ground Work First: Before anyone ever sits in the saddle, young horses learn how to lead gracefully, yield to pressure, and listen to vocal cues on the ground.
Ponying on the Trails: As they mature, we take young horses out along the trails ponied alongside an experienced lead horse. They get used to ocean waves, rustling river trees, and barking dogs with zero weight on their back and a calm veteran horse by their side.
First Riders: When a horse is physically mature and mentally ready, stepping into the saddle is a simple, natural transition rather than a stressful event.
A Lifetime Home
Our horses aren't temporary workers—they are our family. Because they are raised with respect, given ample pasture time, and allowed to enjoy their work, they maintain their gentle, forgiving nature for decades.
When you ride with us, you are experiencing the result of years of love, patience, and training that has gone into each of our horses. Enjoy!
